Configuring DMARC

DMARC Configuration Guide

This is a walkthrough for configuring your DNS settings with "DMARC" in your domain provider. The steps below for configuration should apply to whatever sending service you use.

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance)

  1. First, login to your domain provider. Select "Domain List" and choose the domain you're configuring. Then click "Advanced DNS Settings" and you will see your records.
  2. Domain List Step - Select your domain from the domain listAdvanced DNS Step - Click on Advanced DNS Settings to view your records
  3. Next, you will create a new "TXT" record
  4. Add TXT Record Step - Create a new TXT record
  5. In the "Host" field, input "_dmarc"
  6. DMARC Host Name Step - Input _dmarc in the Host field
  7. Navigate to "https://dmarc.postmarkapp.com/" to generate your DMARC
  8. Input an email address into the "Your Email Address" field (for monitoring DMARC reports)
  9. DMARC Postmark Email Address Step - Enter email address for DMARC reports
  10. Input your domain name into the "Send Reports about this Domain" field
  11. DMARC Postmark Your Domain Step - Enter your domain name in the Send Reports field
  12. Copy and paste the DMARC provided by postmarkapp into the "Value" field of the "TXT" record
  13. Generated DMARC Copy Step - Copy the generated DMARC record from PostmarkGenerated DMARC Paste Step - Paste the DMARC record into the Value field
  14. Change the "p=none" to "p=reject" to instruct receiving servers to reject mail not passing SPF and DKIM checks
  15. P=none to P=reject Step - Change p=none to p=reject in the DMARC record
  16. Save your changes

Having DMARC in place used to be a recommendation, but in today's email infrastructure, it's imperative to have it configured correctly. Modern spam filters often don't let emails through at all if DMARC is not set-up. (Be aware that you may need to wait up to 72 hours for your DNS settings to update.)
